Graphic Artist

A friend and I were discussing about how a person becomes an Graphic Artist? We were noticing that a lot of our former college classmates were using the job title of a Graphic Artist. Could someone explain how they became an Artist that have mastered the craft of an Graphic Art designer and why they are called professional Graphic Artist?

The term Graphic Artist in general for me is a person who uses digital media to create art. There are many forms of Graphic Artist such as 3D or 2D graphic artists. Many people think that if they can make a website they are graphic artist, it is the same as a person who can paint a box red and call themselves artist. Graphic Artists are people who study art using computer and are able to create digital art worth looking at. Graphic Artist can use the digital media really well and may have some sort of certificate or degree to be a professional Graphic Artist. Many people don't have to have a degree but they need a portfolio of work to show people that they can actually do he work.

I agree with what you are saying, but how do you get to that level of professionalism? What books are you reading and what is your technique?
